If you need information about Session Locations, please send Doctor Beverly an email using the Contact Form on the sidebar to your Right.

There are numerous rules related to DV Treatment.  Getting Started in DV Treatment requires that you know about these Rules Below as well as others:

PLANS – PLANS – PLANS !!! Don't GET CAUGHT WITHOUT Your PLAN!!!

A wise person once said, “Those who fail to plan; plan to fail.”  Or "If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail!"  Benjamin Franklin

Hence it's a wise assumption, that Successful DV Treatment has a lot of Planning to it.  Right?

What do we mean by Successful DV Treatment?  Is basically to end DV -- To get through DV Treatment and never again have DV in your life -- As a Perpetrator as a Victim..

This takes some planning... and a lot of effort... and a little bit of luck.  But we can do it.

These plans need to be done in order successfully complete DV Treatment:  In other words, IF I AM MISSING ANY ONE of the items below, then I might be falling behind in MY DV TREATMENT!!!

In order to get caught up on my DV Treatment; I need to look over each of the Links below and then complete the Worksheet that can be found by clicking on the LINK at the end of each one.

And if you need help, Dr. B. will be glad to help you with this important task:

Start HERE:

>>> What are my Risk Factors? So What is a Risk Factor?

A Risk Factors is: “Something that increases a person's chances of developing a disease. For example, cigarette smoking is a risk factor for lung cancer, and obesity is a risk factor for heart disease" (Source).”  Just like Alcohol can be a Risk Factor for Domestic Violence.

Potential Risk Factors for DV Worksheet

Another kind of Plan is a Treatment Plan:

A Treatment helps me guide my treatment from the beginning so that my Treatment will be Successful -- which might even make me feel like a better person.

>>> When was the last time I completed a Treatment Plan.  Read about it right here: Treatment Plan?

This is about ME doing MY BEST to get the MOST out of my DV Treatment so that I will have healthier relationships and then I will be happier and so will my Partner(s).

So now, let's talk about Personal Change Plans.  During a person's DV Treatment, they should do at least 3.  Personal Change Plans tend to be about 4-5 questions and they tend to take about 10 minutes each.

Is it Worth It to you???  I hope so.

My Domestic Violence Treatment Check-In & Check-Up

It is important for everyone to know that in order to successfully complete Domestic Violence Offender Treatment, he or she must demonstrate Progress in terms of the Process Itself as well as the Outcome.

In other words: in order to get a point where a person can be considered for Successful Discharge from DV Treatment, he or she must use the Process and Related Tools here (as noted below), to show that they are taking this Treatment seriously, they are doing the best they can to get the most out of it, and that they are consistently making Positive Changes that will increase the likelihood that they will never again have DV-Related Problems in a Relationship; much less, DV-Related Charges.

DV Treatment Check-Up:

How am I doing in DV Treatment?  The following is a list of indicators that a person is on course for eventually successfully completing DV Treatment.

The following is a general list of what is expected of a person who is to Successfully Complete DV Treatment:

  • No new Restraining Order or Protection Order Violations.
  • 100% Sobriety.  100% Compliance with Testing.  And / Or in Treatment for Substance Use.
  • Meeting All Requirements for Second Clinical Contacts.
  • Meeting General Objectives of DV Treatment.
  • Meeting Client-Specific Goals for DV Treatment.
  • Consistently Paying for Treatment.
  • Demonstrating Significant Changes indicative of prevention of DV in the future.

  • Have I completed all Intake / Evaluation Interviews with Dr. B or other DV Counselor?
  • Have I completed, signed and returned all paperwork that was sent to me by Dr. Beverly?
  • Have I started to Identify my Risk Factors?
  • Have I been attending Sessions with either Dr. B. or my DV Counselor every week?
  • Have I missed any weekly Sessions?  (Must not miss more than 2).

Developing Ownership of Your DV Treatment & Your Future: What is Your Explanatory Model?

This sounds CRAZY!!!  But... THIS IS YOUR LIFE... right???  This week's Module is about You. This week's lesson is about you taking ownership of YOUR DV Treatment.    Ownership???  Say Wha....???

In Business, a Sense of Ownership can be defined as: "the level of attention that an owner focuses on their business. A sense of ownership is the differentiated mentality of people who want to see their company thrive, ensuring stability, profits and growth." (Source).

Whereas, in DV Offender Treatment, the term "Ownership" means: 'The level of attention that a DV Client focuses on his or her progress in DV Treatment.  A sense of Ownership is the differential mentality of DV Treatment Consumers who want to see themselves thrive, ensuring stability, good fortune and growth -- particularly in terms of his or her relationships.'

The idea here today is intended to facilitate the following about Your Treatment:

 --- For Dr. B to be able to Explain the treatment in a way that makes sense to you;

 --- For us (both you and Dr. B) to set positive expectations about your DV treatment;

 --- For us to set realistic expectations for DV treatment;

--- For us to Address key concerns about your DV Offense; and

--- For us to counteract any catastrophic expectations that you might have about your DV Offense and subsequent Treatment.  (Source)

Why does any of this matter?
In order to truly Engage in DV Treatment and to get the most out of DV Treatment a person needs to develop a sense of Ownership about his or her Treatment; and this will lead to a deeper and more thorough understanding of their DV Offense and their DV Treatment.
In short, this process is designed to help you get the most out of your DV Treatment by helping you develop a sense of familiarity and ownership of your DV Treatment -- as well as better sense about ways to prevent DV in the future.

What is My Explanatory Model?

Or better still: What is your Explanatory Model for your DV Offense and Subsequent Treatment?  An Explanatory Model can be defined as: "A useful description of why and how a thing works or an explanation of why a phenomenon is the way it is. The explanatory model is used as a substitute for "the full explanation" of the thing in question: because the full explanation is unavailable. (Source)

In Healthcare, an Explanatory Model can be viewed as: "the manner in which patients explain their health conditions and consequences. Much theoretical work has been done in health psychology/behavior medicine on this topic, and it has been applied to prediction of patient coping and adherence with treatments and to prediction of disease outcomes" (Source).

Likewise, an Explanatory Model for Dr. B's DV Treatment can be as follows: The Purpose of Dr. B's DV Offender Treatment is to help a person get to where they are less likely than before, to ever again have DV-Type Thinking, DV-Type Feeling or DV-Type Behaving in their life.  Additionally, the purpose includes that idea that should a person find himself or herself again at-risk for  DV-Type behavior, he or she will have resources that are intended to help him or her get the help they need in order to prevent any future DV Offenses.  In this way, a primary purpose of DV Offender Treatment is to help people never again fall victim to; have to witness; or to be charged with a DV-type Offense.

So what's all this about "Explanatory Models"?

Well, in 1978, Kleinman and associates (1978) published a paper that discussed the importance of the explanatory model.  They wrote:

“Eliciting the patient’s (explanatory) model gives the physician knowledge of the beliefs the patient holds about his illness, the personal and social meaning he attaches to his disorder, his expectations about what will happen to him and what the doctor will do, and his own therapeutic goals.

Comparison of patient model with the doctor’s model enables the clinician to identify major discrepancies that may cause problems for clinical management. Such comparisons also help the clinician know which aspects of his explanatory model need clearer exposition to patients (and families), and what sort of patient education is most appropriate. And they clarify conflicts not related to different levels of knowledge but different values and interests. Part of the clinical process involves negotiations between these explanatory models, once they have been made explicit.” (Source).

"Psychiatrist and anthropologist Arthur Kleinman’s theory of explanatory models (EMs) proposes that individuals and groups can have vastly different notions of health and disease. Kleinman proposed that instead of simply asking patients, “Where does it hurt,” the physicians should focus on eliciting the patient’s answers to “Why,” “When,” “How,” and “What Next.” (Source).

"Kleinman suggests the following questions to learn how your patient sees his or her illness" (Source).

(Now, go back to the previous passage about Kleinman's work, and re-read the passage.  But this time; every time you find terms such as "health conditions and consequences" and "disease" and "illness"; consider instead substituting the phrases "Domestic Violence Offense", "Ways of DV-type thinking", "Deep-Rooted Destructive Emotions that lead to DV", and/or "Behavior Patterns that lead to DV Offenses").

Kleinman's Eight Questions as a way to bring forth a Client's Explanatory Model:

Now, please consider this modified Example of "Arthur Kleinman's Eight Questions" (below).  Now it is 11 (Eleven) Questions, as Adapted by Dr. B for DV Offender Treatment and DV Prevention.  Give each question a shot to help develop your own Explanatory Model.  Dr. B's Eleven Questions for Persons in DV Offender Treatment are as follows:

I know different people have different ways of understanding the Challenges that a DV Offender Faces — please help me understand how you see things.

1.  What do you call DV and/or your DV Offense?
  • What name does it have?
2.  What do you think causes DV and/or caused your DV Offense?

3.  Why do you think DV and/or your DV Offense started when it did?

4.  What does DV and/or your DV Offense do to you?
  • How does it work?
5.  How severe is (or was) your DV Offense?
  • Will it have a short or long Impact on your life?
  • Will it have a short or long Impact on the lives of others?
6.  What do you fear most about DV and/or your DV Offense?

7.  What are the chief problems that DV and/or your DV Offense have caused for you?

8.  What kind of treatment do you think you should receive?

  • What are the most important results you hope to receive from treatment?

                  9.  What experiences do you feel that your Partner (the "victim") has had                                                       in relation to your DV Offense?

                10.  What experiences do you feel that your Children and/or your family have had                                         in relation to your DV Offense?

                11.  What experiences do you feel that your Community has had                                                                      in relation to your DV Offense?

Absence Attestation: If You Have Missed Any Weeks, Please Complete Your Absence Attestation Form Here

RULE 1: Every Week of Participation in this DV Program must be accounted for.
RULE 2: No DV Client should miss more than one DV Session for any given 10 weeks in DV Treatment.  Once a DV Client misses 3 DV Treatment Sessions (including Intake, Evaluation, Groups, Individual, Treatment Planning, Denial, or Reinstatement Sessions).
If a DV Client fails to honor either Rule 1 or Rule 2 (above), the Multidisciplinary Treatment Team (MTT) must meet to discuss this matter; then the Client can be discharged from Treatment as "Unsuccessful", required to do additional Treatment(s), and/or Temporarily Suspended from DV Treatment until the issues causing absences are resolved.
This means that every time you miss attending your DV Session (Group or Individual) for one week, you must complete one of these Absence Attestation forms and submit it to Dr. Beverly.  All absences from any type of DV Appointment require that you complete an Absence Attestation form.  Please see the Link to the Absence Attestation Form, below.
Naturally, a Communicated Absence -- where Dr. Beverly is notified at least 24 hours in advance, is looked upon much more favorably than a No Call / No Show or an AWOL Absence.
In order to be considered for a Communicated Absence, you must do this within 48 hours of your absence. Technically, almost all absences should be communicated to Dr. Beverly at least 24 hours prior to your scheduled Session.  If you do not Communicate about your Absence with Dr. B within 48 hours of your Absence, it will be considered a Non-Communicated Absence.
If you have documentation of any kind to send to Dr. B., please do so by photographing or scanning the documentation and emailing it to him.  If you are sending in Documentation, you must still complete this Form and Submit it in order for this to be a Communicated Absence.
Also, please be sure to check out the "Absence Make-Up Assignments" on this Blog, so that when you complete this Form and are asked to state which Make-Up Assignment you plan to complete, you will know what you are committing to.
It is important to note that Make-Up Assignments do not Make-Up for your missing any DV Sessions.  However, if you complete Make-Up Assignments when ever you miss a session, the MTT is more likely to be more lenient on you for missing the sessions that you had to miss.
Although there are no "Excused Absences", Communicated Absences and Absences for which one completes a Make-Up Assignment, are looked upon much more favorably by the MTT than Non-Communicated Absences.  Furthermore, if Absences are Communicated in advance, this is even better.
It is important to note that once a person reaches three (3) Absences of any kind, he or she may be dropped from the Program.

(You must complete one of these for each week that you were absent, from the beginning of your treatment).

Dr. B's New Schedule of Group Sessions IS CHANGING again. Check it out!

PLEASE NOTE:  This Is the New DV Treatment Group Schedule.  In the future, it may change.  Be Sure To Read This Entire Post and Form Here, Click on all of the Links (below), Complete of the Linked Forms that these Links lead to, and Follow the Instructions Below throughout your DV Treatment. Thank you!

(This NEW Schedule of Groups Begins November 9th, 2022.)

Please read these Top Ten Essentials:

1. TREATMENT SETTINGS: Please NOTE: (All of Dr. B's DV Treatment Sessions are In-Person at this point in time except for those persons who due to serious Disability or other debilitating circumstances that make it literally impossible for this person to attend In-Person.  In order to conduct any sessions remotely (as of October 1, 2022) both Dr. B and the Client must have special equipment and software.  If any remote sessions are scheduled, this must be by Special Prior Arrangement with Dr. B and they will be billed at the higher Individual Session Rate.)

2. JUMPING GROUPS: If you are planning to start attending a Group that you have never attended, or if you are planning to attend a Group that you normally do not attend, please try to let Dr. B know about this at least 24 hours in advance of that Group Session.  And please do so via Text message.

3. IN-PERSON GROUP DISCLOSURE: It is important that if attending an In-person Group that you complete this In-Person Group Session Attendance Disclosure & Consent Form prior to attending).

4. GROUP LOCATIONS: If you plan to attend one of these Groups and you do not know where they are, please TEXT Dr. B. and he will send you the address.

5. COMPLETING WORKSHEETS: Please note that regardless of how a person attends any DV Session, she/he is responsible for completing the Worksheet(s) for that DV Session online on that day.  The link for Worksheets is typically at or near the bottom of the Blog Entry for that week.  So every time you attend a Group, you will be expected to complete the weekly DV Topic Worksheet (typically done online) that will be Linked to the Weekly Topic on the Blog which can be found at this Link here: Dr Bs DV Prevention & Education Blog or  at https://drbsdvpreventionandeducation.blogspot.com/   It is your responsibility to get these done every week.  If you have a challenge that makes it impossible for you to complete your work this way; or if you need help learning how to do this, it is your responsibility to get help from someone you know with this task, or to TEXT Dr. B and get help with this task.  It is important that you understand that if these worksheets are not completed, you cannot complete your DV Treatment.

6. SESSION FEEDBACK FORMS: Each Time you Attend a DV Treatment Session, you will also be required to complete a Session Feedback Form (typically done online) that can be found on the Blog anywhere you find an American Flag on this Blog, or AT THIS LINK RIGHT HERE.  Or just go the Link listed below: https://drbsdvpreventionandeducation.blogspot.com/2020/04/thank-you-for-visiting-dr-bs-dv.html  Sometimes -- but rarely --  Worksheets and Feedback forms can be completed on paper if provided by Dr. Beverly.  Either way, it is your responsibility to see that your weekly Worksheets and Feedback Forms are completed before you finish your DV Treatment. It is your responsibility to get these done every week.  If these are not completed, you cannot complete your DV Treatment.

7. PAYING FOR YOUR TREATMENT SESSIONS: Please also note that regardless of how a person attends any DV Session, she/he is also responsible for paying the fee for the Group Session online or in-person at the time of the Session.  Every client is required to pay for their DV Treatment Services every week as they attend.  Please CLICK THIS LINK RIGHT HERE to learn about how to pay for your DV Treatment, or just go to this Link listed here. https://drbsdvpreventionandeducation.blogspot.com/2022/01/very-important-notice-about-paying-for.html   If these payments are not made in full, you cannot complete your DV Treatment.
